Sunlight in an Empty Room by Spencer Finch
Hello to all the lovely creatures out there!
In today's post I'd like to introduce you to a sculpture made by Spencer Finch. Its title Sunlight in an Empty Room.
Coming to this sculpture, you might have seen something similar before. This is because actually this artwork re-creates the effect of a passing cloud In Emily Dickinson's backyard in Amherst, Massachussets. Quite simple as a creation, the bank of three types of fluorescent lamps generates a simulation of the daylight, and the hanging filters shift the color and intensity of the sunlight to replicate thw shadow cast by a cloud. The "passing of the cloud" is activated by the viewer walking around the sculpture, out of the daylight into the shadow and then back into the daylight again.
What makes Sunlight in an Empty Room particularly interesting is that it feels different from what we usually expect of sculpture. Instead of heavy stone or bronze, Finch uses light, filters, and simple materials to create something almost intangible. It shows how sculpture today is not only about form or mass, but also about experience—about how space and perception can be shaped in subtle ways.
This work also reminds us that art doesn’t always have to be complex in its construction to be powerful. By using everyday elements like fluorescent lamps and colored filters, Finch creates a poetic moment that resonates with memory and sensation. It’s an invitation to slow down, to notice how fragile and beautiful even the most ordinary shifts in light can be.
See you in a next post and as always thank you for reading!
