Spirit by George Roux

Hello to all the lovely creatures out there!

Today I'm here with a new painting to check out! It is called Spirit and it was created by George Roux.

Spirit - George Roux - 1885

But first a little bit about the artist himself: George Roux was a French artist and book illustrator. He is best known actually for his illustrations, especially the ones he created for the science-fiction novels of Jules Verne in the series Les voyages extraordinaires, drawing illustrations for at least 22 of his novels. However, today I want us to pay more attention to a painting he created back in 1885!

The painting titled Spirit was created in 1885. The painting depicts a man working in his desk late in the evening when he is suddenly seems to be interrupted by the appearance of a ghostly woman that plays the piano. He stands up, stunned as the sight of this beautiful spectral vision. Does he recognise this woman? Was she his lover, taken too soon from this earth? Perhaps she is playing "their" song. Or is it all in his imagination? We will never know.

The painting is oil on canvas and it seems that Roux wanted to explore themes of spiritualism, memory, and love transceding death. The painting is exceptionally detailed in portraying an emotional supernatural encounter between the suggestive couple and what's more this painting cannot be found in a museum as it is actually part of a private collection!

For me, Roux does an exceptional job in depicting colors and shades and making them take form and life. The details he adds in his paintings are subtle but an eye exploring can check them out! I do like this painting a lot and I hope you also have found it as interesting as I did when I first came across it!

As always thank you for reading and I'll see you in a next post!
