Dirk Braeckman: An artistic pick
Hello to all the lovely creatures out there!
In today's post I am here to present you Dirk Braeckman! Getting a bit further from the part of contemporary artists, focusing on paintings, sculptures or installations, today I'd like us to take a dive in photography!
A little bit about Braeckman: He was born in 1958 in Eeklo in Belgium and he is currently living and working in Ghent, Belgium. He studied photography and film at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1977 until 1981. Although photography is Braeckman's medium, he works more like a painter.
He deviates from photographic conventions and opts for an experimental, painterly approach. For him, the photo is only a starting point; The creation only takes shape in the darkroom. Overexposing the photo paper or smudging the fixative makes the hand of the maker visible, which also leads to unique works of large format.
Braeckman's works seem to be stripped of time, place and story. Braeckman does not make images to inform us about reality. On the contrary, the images are often ambiguous or unfathomable. They carry a promise of a revelation that will never happen. In his works the darkness stems from the dark side that clings to every wordly object.
Braeckman's work to me, seem quite intriguing: having worked with and a black and white canvas in photogrphy, his photos demonstrate lively texture, a sense of dreaminess, clear yet so foggy and unattainable. His portraits capture the human face, but also go beyond. I find his photography quite enjoyable really, if you are also a fan of this kind of photography, i do suggest you give it a go you will not be disappointed!
As always thank you for readinhg and i will see you in a next post!
